Italy: 65 Per Cent Of Electricity Generation To Come From Renewable Sources By 2030

- Jul 11, 2023-

On 1 July, in the latest proposal for an integrated national energy and climate plan (PNIEC) submitted to the European Union, Italy's Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) said that by 2030, 65 per cent of Italy's electricity generation will come from renewable sources. It is also planned that by the end of the century, 40 per cent of total energy demand and 65 per cent of electricity consumption will come from renewable sources. According to the plan, the share of renewable energy will reach 37 per cent in the cooling and heating sector, 31 per cent in the transport sector and 42 per cent in industrial hydrogen capacity. The rooftop solar market in Italy has more than doubled in the last year, supported by relevant policies. The Italian government has simplified the application process and made more than $200 million available for rooftop PV deployment in early 2022.

According to the State of Europe's Climate 2022 report, published late last month, in 2022, renewable energy will for the first time generate more electricity than fossil fuels in Europe: wind and solar power will account for 22.3 per cent of the EU's electricity, more than fossil fuels (20 per cent). Italy's share of renewable energy in total final energy consumption is reported to be 40 per cent in the national integrated energy and climate plan, which has been updated, while the share for electricity consumption only rises to 65 per cent. Of this, 37 per cent of renewable energy is used for heating and cooling and 31 per cent for transport.

According to Reuters, Italy's energy ministry said that the new plan to increase the share of renewable energy mentioned above is a slight increase from the target announced three years ago. And in its latest national renewable energy tender, Italy signed contracts for 200MW of solar photovoltaic projects and a large number of wind power projects.

In addition, Spain has made similar moves in terms of renewable energy policy. As one of the pioneers of the renewable energy sector in Europe, Spain has invested heavily in solar and wind energy over the past decade. Moreover, Spain adopted onshore wind power technology earlier, so that onshore wind power now accounts for more than 20 per cent of the country's electricity generation. In recent years, Spain has also invested heavily in solar photovoltaics, increasing its renewable energy generation capacity.

June 28, in the Spanish government announced a new national energy and climate plan can be seen, the new plan for the use of solar, wind and other types of renewable energy generation in 2030 to make a substantial upward adjustment of the proportion of the target. According to the new plan, Spain's share of renewable energy generation will reach 81 per cent in 2030. In addition, the new plan will increase the 2030 solar PV installation target from 37GW to more than 76GW.

And in Germany, more than half of the electricity demand in the first half of 2023 will be met by renewable energy.
