Chariot, Total Eren Bring 430 MW Of Wind And Solar To Zambia

- Mar 24, 2022-

Africa-focused energy company Chariot Ltd and French power producer Total Eren have struck a deal with First Quantum Minerals Ltd to build a 430-megawatt renewable power plant for the Canadian miner's operations in Zambia.

Through the partnership, the mining and metals company will receive power from local wind and solar power plants, Chariot said on Monday (March 21). Specific details on the renewable energy initiative were not immediately announced, but an update is expected in due course.

The contract is in line with First Quantum Minerals' goal to reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 30% by 2025. The contract comes after Chariot and Total Eren signed an agreement last November to jointly initiate and develop wind and solar projects for mining clients in Africa.

Construction of the wind-solar complex is planned to begin in 2023.

Anthony Mukutuma, general manager of FQM's Kansas West mine, said: "This project will deliver significant benefits to Zambia, unlocking some of its world-class renewable energy potential. Massive renewable energy capacity helps the country realize its untapped solar and wind resources."
