The Cambodian government approved the construction of five power projects with a total capacity of 520 megawatts on 7 April.
According to a public announcement by Cambodian government spokesman Phay Siphan, the approval of the power station project in question was made at a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Phay Siphan said that the Stung Russey Chrum Kandal hydropower project with a capacity of 70 MW and the 100 MW Stung Veal Thmor Kambot hydropower plant in Koh Kong province would be combined into one whole project.
The remaining three projects are photovoltaic plants, a 150 MW plant in Pursat, two 60 MW plants in Kampong Chhnang and Svay Rieng, and an 80 MW plant in Prey Veng.
The Cambodian government highlighted the importance of the above projects in ensuring the sustainable development of Cambodia's energy sector, stating that they will help Cambodia increase the production of clean energy in the country, reduce fuel consumption and become environmentally friendly, retain natural resources and combat climate change.
The Cambodian government will receive a total of approximately US$322.8 million in tax revenue during the operation of the five renewable energy sites.
According to data provided by the Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EAC), power generation in Cambodia will increase by 2.6 per cent to 4,495 MW in 2022 compared to the same period last year.
